Snowmass Village, Colorado – November 8, 2013 — If you lived in, or around, Aspen in the 1960s, if you didn’t know him personally, you probably knew of Tony Gauba. A popular photographer whose work was sold in postcard form throughout Aspen, the Roaring Fork Valley, and Colorado, and was published in local and national publications, Tony’s career was cut tragically short when he died in an accident in 1970. Now some of his photos are being restored by his son, Agustin Goba, and offered as fine art photo prints through his website, www.tonygaubaphoto.com.

Most of Tony’s work has disappeared, lost either when his business was sold after his death, or unfortunately discarded by his wife Maureen when she began suffering from dementia. A relatively small number of his transparencies and negatives survive. Agustin Goba has been holding on to a carton of his father’s original photo prints since Tony’s death and has recently started the laborious work of restoring them. The process starts with making a high resolution scan of each print, then carefully cleaning each scan in Photoshop, using skills he has developed in over thirty years of working as a graphic designer and art director.

So far all of Tony's photos have been scanned from 8" x 10" prints developed and printed by Tony's hand, so while 1-4 hours are spent per image cleaning up the detritus of over 40 years of aging, each appears as close as possible to what Tony intended. Darkroom printing, in the right hands, is an art unto itself, as equally important to the final image as composition, lighting, and subject choice and Agustin tries to preserve those choices as closely as possible.

Tony Gauba was a progenitor of the quintessential Aspen lifestyle. He first came to Aspen as a ski bum in the winter of 1948/1949 and returned in 1959 with wife in tow to start a business and a family. He did whatever he could to provide for his family, which in those years in Aspen meant doing carpentry, writing a popular weekly newspaper column on fly fishing (“The Leaky Boot”), and even spending a summer cutting the Upper Stein Trail on Aspen Highlands. But his main loves, aside from his wife and family, were photography and the outdoors.

Tony’s subject matter ran from rugged, wild landscapes to skiers slicing through fresh powder, from wildlife to the entertainers that came to perform in Aspen, from rodeos to motorcycle races, and to anything else that caught his eye. His photos offer an artist’s eye glimpse of our local history. They can be viewed at www.tonygaubaphoto.com.
